New Project

The Employment Effects of High Growth in India 1980-2010

Sponsors: International Labour Organization (ILO)
Project Director/ Coordinator: Professor Ajit Ghose
The project studies the effect of the pace and pattern of economic growth on the employment conditions in India. It aims to describe changes in employment conditions, captured by a process of reduction of surplus labour and dualism generated through transfer of labour from underemployment in low-productivity activities to full-time employment in high-productivity activities. The study is based on the analysis of development experiences of India in the period since 1980. The study will generate and use a consistent data set employment in India during 1980-2010. It will be based on successive rounds of NSS surveys as well as other sources of labour force and public employment data.
