Teaching and Training
The Institute regularly hosts training programmes for students from India and abroad, with focus on empirical research. Further, in response to continual requests for skill development, reinforcement and training, the Institute’s team has undertaken several initiatives in the form of capacity building workshops and policy advisory services for State Government officials, development activists and social workers, in the focus area of people-centred governance. Scholars from different parts of India as well as abroad visit the Institute for information and data on various development related issues. Besides, the Institute also provides a platform to scholars from different parts of India and abroad, including academicians, policy makers, trade unions, and NGOs, for engaging in purposeful dialogue.
- In collaboration with UNDP, IHD has developed a curriculum for a course on Human Development for Post-Graduate and Diploma students.
- IHD has an ongoing cooperation agreement with UNICEF to support activities on Scheduled Tribes in its Delhi and state offices (Jharkhand, Chhatisgarh, MP, Rajasthan and Assam) and build the capacity of its staff to make UNICEF programmes more inclusive.
- In association with Oxford Poverty Human Development Initiative (OPHI), University of Oxford, IHD conducted an international Summer School on Measurement of Multidimensional Poverty. Students from 12 countries participated in the programme.
- In order to encourage budding young researchers, IHD gives internship opportunities to deserving candidates annually every summer (period subject to change) and engages them in research projects including field surveys. Internships programmes are announced as and when they are conceived.
- The Indira Gandhi National Open University has granted affiliation to the Institute for teaching and training on human development and related issues.
- The Institute is started a Ph.D. programme in Human Development and Labour Economics in 2009. The degree is being granted by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).
IHD Training Programme
Training Programme on Project Proposal Writing, Drafting of Research Reports/Papers and Presentation Skills, 9-11 April 2012, New Delhi
A Training Programme and Workshop on Project Proposal Writing, Drafting of Research Reports/Papers and Presentation Skills was jointly organized by the Institute for Human Development, New Delhi with generous support from the Indian Association of Social Science Institutions (IASSI) during April 9-12, 2012 at IHD. More than 120 applications were received in a short span of 2 weeks reflecting the dire need and demand for such a training programme. A selection of one third of the candidates were made. 32 young researchers/scholars and students from universities and research institutes across the country participated in this three-day workshop. Prof. J Krishnamurty, Visiting Professor, IHD was the lead resource person for the workshop, coordinated by Dr Sumit Mazumdar, Fellow, IHD and Mr Shravan Kumar, Communications Associate, IHD. The workshop was inaugurated by Prof S R Hashim, Chairman/President, IASSI, and Prof Alakh N Sharma, Director, IHD delivered the welcome address. Both the speakers emphasized the importance of the training program towards imparting key lessons and approaches in scientific research communications and writing research proposals to young researchers.
Each day was divided into lectures, assignments, group-discussions, presentations and intensive interaction between the attendees and the resource persons. On Day I (April 9), drafting skills were discussed, followed by exercises on mind-mapping and revising short research papers based on the discussions. Day II (April 10) was devoted to the important aspects of proposal writing. Following an interactive lecture, the trainees were asked to develop brief proposals on selected topics/themes which were then reviewed and specific feedback provided to them. The assignments were worked out by the trainees divided into groups ensuring balance in subjects and experience levels among them. On Day III (April 11), presentation skills were discussed, and group-presentations were made based on few published research papers by prominent scholars. Before concluding the technical sessions of the training program, the trainees were provided with evaluation forms to provide their assessment, feedback and comments on the content, pedagogy and treatment of the different topics taken up during the workshop.
A valedictory session was organized on April 11, presided over by Prof Ramesh Dadhich, Member-Secretary, ICSSR. Prof S R Hashim, Prof Alakh N Sharma, Prof J Krishnamurthy, Prof Atul Sarma (Visiting Professor, IHD), Prof Preet Rustagi (Jt. Director, IHD), Prof S Gupta (Member-Secretary, IASSI) were present. Prof Dadhich expressed his satisfaction on learning about the Training Program, and said that such programmes were in much need for young scholars and students in social sciences across the country. The trainees were handed over certificates of participation by the dignitaries present.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC)—Behaviour-based Safety Training Workshop, 9 June 2012, New Delhi
A one-day training workshop was jointly organized by LabourNet, Bangalore, Institute for Human Development, New Delhi, and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT), Delhi Chapter, in New Delhi on 9 June 2012.
The workshop was a capacity building exercise and aimed at creating awareness about behaviour-based safety concepts among the DMRC team members and its contractors. The training workshop modules covered various aspects of safety concerns like life-skills, human behaviour and psychology, stress management skills, staff relationship and communication skills, safety observations skills and time management with safety attitude and culture in workplaces. The training curriculum comprised a psychological and communication exercise, and audio-video presentation by the subject matter experts. About 40 managers, safety managers, supervisors, contractors, engineers, planners, experts and stakeholders from infrastructural companies participated in the programme and benefited from it.
Econometrics and NSS Data Analysis
In order to enhance skills on the handling of National Sample Survey (NSS) data and the use of applied econometric techniques, IHD conducted a workshop on “Basic Econometrics and National Sample Survey Data” during 2-4 August 2012. The workshop was conducted by Vidhya Soudararajan, Ph.D scholar, Department of Applied Economics and Management, Cornell University, USA. Prior to the workshop, a session on the employment of STATA (statistical software) and concepts, and the nature and characteristics of employment and unemployment was conducted by Dr. Ajit Ghose and Dr. Sandip Sarkar on 1 August 2012. More than 20 research staff members of IHD participated in this workshop, including senior fellows, associates and researchers. The workshop helped researchers in understanding, extracting and further analysing the NSS data. The training programme also provided the participants an opportunity to develop and improve their analytical skills with regard to the use of econometric tools and techniques.

The Institute for Human Development Eastern Regional Centre organised a Training Course for Young Scholars on Project Proposal Writing, Drafting of Research Reports/Papers and Presentation Skills held at Ranchi during 21-23 December 2014. The Course was directed by Prof. J. Krishnamurty, Visiting Professor at the Institute for Human Development, New Delhi with the assistance of IHD staff from New Delhi and Ranchi. The programme was coordinated by Mr. Ashwani Kumar, Programme Coordinator, IHD-ERC, Ranchi; Ms. Swati Dutta, Faculty and Mr. Shravan Kumar, Programme & Communication Associate from New Delhi. The Training programme focused on improving capabilities in three important areas: improving drafting; improving the preparation of research proposals, and improving presentation. 15 young researchers/scholars and students from universities and research institutes from the Eastern India (States of Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal & Odisha) participated in this three-day workshop. Prof Alakh N Sharma, Director, IHD delivered the welcome address and emphasized the importance of the training programme towards imparting key lessons and approaches in scientific research communications and writing research proposals to young researchers. The trainees were handed over certificates of participation by Dr. Harishwar Dayal, Director, Eastern Regional Centre, Ranchi. The three days training programme was evaluated by Dr. Swati Dutta, Faculty at IHD.

We received a very positive feedback from the participants. The training programme, including the individual sessions, was rated at more than 8 out of 10 point scale. The participants felt that they had greatly benefited in terms of acquiring systematic skills for drafting and proposal writing and learnt more effective ways of using power point presentations. They also expressed a desire to know more about the details of preparation, submission and evaluation of project proposals. They sought more information about funding agencies which grant small grants for young researchers. There was a demand for more such training programmes for the eastern region as well as other parts of the country.
