Biography: Dr. Md. Azharuddin Akhtar is currently an Associate Fellow at the Institute for Human Development. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, where he studied from 2017 to 2023, following his M.Phil. in Economics from the same institution (2015-2017). Dr. Akhtar’s research lies at the intersection of Health Economics, Microeconomics, Applied Econometrics, and Development Economics. His scholarly work has garnered significant accolades, including a Research Fellowship from the University Grants Commission in 2014 and a student grant from NCAER for his research thesis. Dr. Akhtar has made substantial contributions to the academic community through his publications in peer-reviewed journals, a chapter in an edited volume, and a report on cancer economics. His commitment to advancing knowledge is evident from his active participation in international conferences and his role as a visiting faculty member, where he has taught undergraduate and postgraduate students at distinguished institutions such as Jamia Millia Islamia University. His research focuses on the policy impacts within the health sector and explores health-related decision-making, particularly under conditions of risk and uncertainty. Dr. Akhtar employs valuation techniques such as stated preference surveys and discrete choice experiments. This methodological rigor allows him to integrate his expertise in health economics with interdisciplinary fields, including environmental, educational, and labor economics. Moreover, Dr. Akhtar demonstrates adeptness in handling large-scale datasets, such as those from the National Sample Survey (NSS), India Human Development Survey (IHDS), and National Family Health Survey (NFHS). He is proficient in designing and executing field surveys, further solidifying his capacity to contribute valuable insights into health economics and related disciplines.
