Principal Researcher:
Prof. Tanuka Endow

Theme: Education and Capabilities
Sponsors: Tech Mahindra Foundation

Aims and Objectives: The research aims to evaluate the learning outcomes of the In-service Teacher Education Institute (ITEI) intervention in primary schools and equip and empower teachers to implement outcomes-based teaching-learning approaches. It will focus on improving students’ performance in primary schools within the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) and North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC). Additionally, the study will assess the preparedness of teachers and principals to implement comprehensive education and align the ITEI project with the needs of teachers and other stakeholders in MCD schools in Delhi. The research will also aim to enhance teacher capacity, effective school governance, and parental involvement in school education.

Background:

  • In-service Teacher Education Institute (ITEI):
    • Established in 2013 in collaboration with EDMC and in 2018 with NDMC.
    • Aims for capacity enhancement, teacher empowerment, enriched learning opportunities, effective school governance, and improved parental involvement.

Methodology: The baseline assessment evaluated primary school teachers, principals, and other stakeholders of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) and North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC). This assessment was guided by an inception report and data collection tools, which were finalized and submitted to the sponsor prior to data collection.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Report Submission:
    • A full report to be submitted to the sponsor upon completion of the study.

Impact of COVID-19:

  • Due to the COVID-19 induced lockdown, schools were closed, leading to the suspension of the project.
  • The project is expected to commence once the schools reopen.

Key Points:

  • Capacity Building:
    • Focus on continuous professional development of teachers and school leaders.
    • Aim to create happier classrooms and improve students’ performance.
  • Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Enhance the engagement of parents in school education.
    • Ensure effective school governance through trained and empowered teachers and principals.

This baseline assessment aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current state of primary education in EDMC and NDMC schools and the impact of TMF’s ITEI initiative on improving the teaching-learning environment. The findings will help in shaping future interventions to enhance educational outcomes in these regions.
