A Spatio-Temporal Investigation into the Performance of a North-eastern State: A Human Development Approach
Raju Mandal
Today the motto of every economy is to attain a higher level of human development rather than merely so-called ‘economic growth’ in per capita income. In fact, the performance of an economy or region has begun to be measured by how it fares with respect to its attainments in human development. Thus, it is quite pertinent to assess the status of Assam in this regard in comparison to other states of India, apart from district level variations in the state. The Assam Human Development Report, 2003, provides a detailed account of different aspects of human development across the various districts of the state. This study seeks to provide an alternative measure of human development at the district level with an in-depth analysis of their status, while simultaneously exploring inter-district disparities and policy implications in this regard.
